Why Troop 8?

Camping

Winter Camp 2021 Campfire

It wouldn’t be scouting without camping! Camping is a great opportunity to have fun, progress in rank, develop social connections, and spend time in the great outdoors. In the words of Lord Robert Baden-Powell, “A week of camp life is worth six months of theoretical teaching in the meeting room.” Every year, Troop 8 attends both summer and winter camp at Camp Attakapas in Trout, Louisiana. We also go on multiple small camping trips throughout the year.

Community Service

Troop 8 participates in a variety of different community service events, and continually seeks to take an active role in the community. Some of our past service includes:

  • Donating to the food bank through Scouting for Food.
  • Ringing bells for the Salvation Army.
  • Multiple Eagle Scout projects.

Outings

Scouts stand in front of the FC&G M-4, a historic 1937 railbus.

Troop 8 goes on a range of outings, including:

  • Camping at local places of interest, such as the Southern Forest Heritage Museum in Long Leaf, Louisiana.
  • Hiking trips to places like the Kisatchie National Forest.
  • Occasional out of state trips, most recently to NASA’s Johnson Space Center.

Leadership

Eagle Scout Court of Honor

Troop 8 has a high rate of Eagle Scout alumni, a rank which only about 6% of scouts ever attain. Becoming an Eagle Scout involves leadership, communication skills, and responsibility. As a scout-led troop, youth will be encouraged to take on leadership roles, actively planning and leading events. This eventually culminates in young leaders who become more productive, friendly, and well-rounded members of society.

Meetings

First Baptist Church
