2021 Summer Camp at Camp Attakapas started on June 13 and ended on June 18. Each day was “themed” with a different holiday. Here’s what happened:
Day 0: Arrival
All of us arrived on Sunday, June 13.
Day 1: Easter
The first day’s theme was Easter. The scouts wore colored hats and made balloons resembling Easter eggs.
Day 2: Mardi Gras
The scouts made an improvised Mardi Gras float out of a wagon, some construction paper, and some other decorations. They rode down the main road in camp in the camp’s “parade.”
Day 3: The Fourth of July / Luau
The theme for day three was the Fourth of July. The luau at the waterfront was also that ay. The scouts dressed up with patriotic accessories and held up an American flag at the flag ceremony. There was a cardboard boat raceway the luau, which we came second in!
Day 4: Halloween
The scouts all brought costumes to wear on Halloween. One scout even dressed up as Michael Jackson and did a smooth moonwalk! (You can find a previous performance of his on the troop YouTube channel!)
Day 5: Christmas
The fifth and final day was Christmas themed. The scouts just wish it was the temperature of Christmas! It was a sweltering 92º degrees Fahrenheit!
Day 5: Closing Campfire
Finally, the week was over. The scouts worked long and hard earning new merit pages, developing new skills, and becoming better people. They all had fun, and none got dehydrated! All of their hard work paid off; they won 3 awards!
Over the course of the week, the scouts worked extra hard to keep their campsite clean. For this reason, Troop 8 came first place in campsite inspections!
The scouts also cooked over the campfire for a dutch-oven cook-off. They entered rice-a-roni, pineapple upside-down cake, and 3 other delicious foods. Troop 8 won first place!
Finally, for participation in all camp events, a service project, and working their butts off, the troop won the “Honor Troop” award. It hasn’t been given out in years, and Troop 8 earned it!
Troop Service Project
Over the course of the week, the scouts all pitched in to help paint new posts with the scout law. You can see these coming into Camp Attakapas. They painted them brown, added wording, and the council helped dig the old ones out and replace them.
And all the scouts are glad that they finally got to go home.
